The Y raise is a shoulder isolation exercise where the arms trace a Y shape overhead, raising dumbbells at 30-45° from the body midline. It hits the lateral deltoid, lower trap and rear delt in a single movement — one of the best posture-corrective shoulder exercises.

What it is

The Y raise is a shoulder isolation exercise performed with light dumbbells (or bodyweight prone on a bench). The lifter raises the arms at approximately 30-45° from the midline of the body, forming a Y shape overhead. Thumbs point up throughout. It’s often programmed as a shoulder health and posture exercise.

Muscles worked

MuscleContribution
Lateral deltoid~35 %
Lower trap, rhomboids~30 %
Posterior deltoid~25 %
Core~10 %

How to Y raise: 5 steps

  1. Set up

Stand tall or lie prone on incline bench, **light dumbbells in each hand, thumbs up.**

  2. Position arms

**Arms extended straight down, thumbs pointing forward.**

  3. Raise into Y

**Raise both arms out to 30-45° from midline** and up overhead — Y shape.

  4. Hold

**Brief squeeze at the top, feel lower trap engage.**

  5. Controlled descent

Lower over 2 seconds to starting position.

How it differs from lateral raise

  • Arms raised at 30-45°. Standard lateral raise goes straight out to the side.
  • Higher end position. Arms end overhead in Y shape, not shoulder height.
  • Lower trap engagement. The Y position specifically recruits the lower trap.
  • Very light loads. 2-5 kg dumbbells maximum for most lifters.

Common mistakes

When to use this variation

Use Y raises for shoulder health, posture, and lower trap activation. Program 2-3 sets of 12-20 reps. Excellent daily warm-up or between-sets shoulder prep for any pressing session.

FAQ

Standing or prone?

Standing works with dumbbells (light). Prone on an incline bench isolates the lower trap even more. Try both.

Thumbs up or down?

Thumbs up (external rotation). Thumbs down internally rotates the shoulder and increases impingement risk.

Y raise or lateral raise?

Different targets. Lateral raise = pure lateral delt hypertrophy. Y raise = mixed lateral/rear delt + lower trap for posture. Use both.
