arnold toast sticks

This delicious and nutritious French toast recipe comes straight from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s newsletter.

It’s a favorite from his book, “You Can’t Screw This Up,” and it’s easy to see why.

Packed with 25 grams of protein per serving, this breakfast classic is not only healthy but also bursting with flavor. Perfect for any day, it stores well for a quick grab-and-go breakfast that can be reheated in a minute.

Let’s get into it!

Ingredients (4 servings, 16 sticks total):

  • 4 slices sprouted grain cinnamon raisin bread, cut vertically so that each slice has four “sticks”
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 cup liquid egg whites (or 6 egg whites)
  • 2 cups unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 scoops protein powder (unflavored or vanilla)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, plus more for greasing the pan
  • 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons unfiltered raw honey
  • 2 apples, very thinly sliced

Recipe

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread a little butter on the inner edges of a 9×13” Pyrex pan using a paper towel.
  2. Line the bread sticks on the bottom of the pan.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the eggs, egg whites, almond milk, vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and protein powder. Whisk until there are no more clumps.
  4. Pour the liquid mixture all over the bread sticks, ensuring they are well soaked. Let it sit while you prepare the apples.
  5. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add the butter, remaining cinnamon, honey, and thinly sliced apples. Cook until the apples soften and become tender.
  6. Spread the cinnamon apples evenly over the soaked bread. Bake for 35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the French toast is no longer wet to the touch.
  7. Let it cool for 10 minutes. Enjoy immediately or store in a refrigerated airtight container for quick breakfasts throughout the week.
