Education

CME Mission Statement

Goal

The American Pain Society's CME program is designed to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate high quality professional education. The American Pain Society will ensure that its members and attendees at its educational activities have access to continuing medical education, which enhances professional competence through current findings from pain research and the clinical applications related to these findings.

Scope

The American Pain Society, an interdisciplinary organization, encourages interdisciplinary exchange of information concerning advances in the field of pain and its treatment. Since pain is a substantive problem for many individuals with a variety of diseases and is of interest to many medical specialties, the concern of the CME program of the Society is to provide continuing medical education to the physician community in general. Our direction is determined by the interests and needs identified by practicing physicians who are active in the American Pain Society and who respond to our needs assessment and membership surveys.

Characteristics of Potential Participants

The American Pain Society CME Program will offer education to physicians as well as basic and clinical scientists, other practicing clinicians, policy analysts, and others and will be appropriate for all levels of knowledge and expertise.

Types of Activities

The American Pain Society will provide continuing medical education in a variety of formats including, but not limited to, lectures, symposia, workshops, clinical skills' applications, panel discussions, poster presentations, and enduring materials. APS will strive to make available web-based CME programs, although the role of the Society in this endeavor may vary as one of resource manager to one of provider and will be evaluated as technological advances and resources become available.
